Today, migrating IT workloads to the Cloud – Cloudification may rank among highest priorities. But how to implement methodically, efficiently and effectively? This article, based on real-world cloud experiences, seeks to provide the answers to these questions.
From the investors’ point of view, Cloudification brings to them risks rather than benefits. Identifying key success factors of Cloudification project is the best approach to make it start. The following are the most important factors we gathered.

Starting cautiously with Cloud assessment
Cloud assessment helps to define the strategy, solution, and roadmap to migrate workloads to cloud with effective effort & cost-saving. Cloud assessment should include the following steps.
  • Current landscape evaluation – to understand deeply the current state of your IT landscape such as bugs, product backlogs, network design, security policy, development process, deployment process, and etc.
  • Migration requirement gathering – to image the future state of your IT landscape such as data protection, operation expectation, cost optimization, and etc.
  • Gaps analysis – to identify differences between current and future state.
  • Migration solution defining – to define migration’s solution, cost, risks, tool and operational impacts after migrating.
Cloud assessment covers finance, technical feasibility and operational impact. And it’s based on 5RE (5 migration paths).

Effective execution with Cloudification
Migration Factory Model defines a strict process including planning, resource preparation, solution and requirement evaluation, tool selection, migration execution, migration monitoring, and cutover. Cutover is the most important activity, it requires backup plan and failback plan to ensure no impact to end-users.
Using tools is critical to reduce cost, shorten time and especially reduce potential risks. FPT Software has built CitusTM Cloudification Suite, whose heart is CitusTM Cloudification Orchestration to handle the following works.

Optimal operation with Managed services
Cloud itself is different from traditional on-premises data-center, so Cloud operation and application management on Cloud have the gaps with traditional operational processes. Cloud and Something as a Services (XaaS) erase the boundaries of infrastructure and applications, one team needs to be organized to operate from infrastructure, security to applications.
Cloud transfers financial expenditure from CAPEX (Capital Expense) to OPEX (Operation Expense), small investment from beginning, flexible adjustment during using are the advantages. With tagging, resource group, or linked subscription account mechanisms, Cloud provides comprehensive solution to control the cost for each service, cost-center or even for any individual in an effective way. Cloud also opens opportunities to optimize usage cost and operation cost for both infrastructure and applications. FPT Software has built 7L framework to support our customers to implement cost optimization.

Cloud inherent automation capabilities help to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of operation and management. The operation and management activities include:
  • Manual activities: frequently review and operate the infrastructure and applications using checklists and guidance.
  • Hybrid activities: proactively monitor the infrastructure and application then alert to an operator to fix when issue happen using alert matrixes.
  • Automation activities: proactively or predictively fix the infrastructure and applications’ issues by applying machine learning and AI.
Additionally, Self-service Portal solution towards ordinary users who do not have deep knowledge of Cloud and system administration can easily use Cloud and operate daily works. FPT Software has built own all Self-service Portal solution.
