By taking advantage of the popularity of email, many hackers use it to steal personal and business money, information, as well as sensitive data. This threat has surfaced for years yet received no proper solution in Vietnam. In order to address this issue, FPT Education students had researched and proposed a solution to this in their graduating research project.

Students of FPT Education had researched and provided a solution to the issue of phishing email for their graduation project.

After looking into Phishing Email, a group of six students majoring in Data safety, FPT Univeristy realized that it is a complicated method of getting information. Using scamming techniques such as spam emails that link to unreliable websites, disguise the senders’ address, put malicious code in embeded file, hackers could garner users’ information and gain access to important data such as usernames, passwords, confidential materials, sensitive data, or implant toxic softwares in the users’ devices. Due to sophisticated disguise, users are unable to differentiate between real emails and fake ones.

According to FPT Education students, no tool can assist businesses in predicting malicious emails and filtering emails in Vietnam. Therefore, after researching, the group of students proposed a solution to this problem. Specifically, the members of the group applied the algorithms of Machine Learning to forecast and classify email, and detect malicious emails to send prompt warnings to users.

The product presented includes a plugin which runs on Chrome and a website which manages email accounts. In particular, the group develops a management software for emails which are sent on a daily basis. Using machine learning algorithms, this software can identify technical and language-related attributes, and understand unique features of phishing emails, enabling it to identify unsafe emails to notify users. At this, users can opt for keeping or eliminating emails. The deleted emails due to threats can still be restored within a certain amount of time. In addition, to avoid data loss, the software is also designed to back up the system and write reports on a fixed schedule.

To ensure data safety, the software is designed to only interfere with technical aspects and not to store any email content. With this, users can be assured when using this filter software without any worry that their emails are read or their personal information is stored.

This is a helpful solution, especially for businesses in this time when attacks through email are widespread and dangerous. However, there are still certain limitations in this product.

Huynh Nhat Anh, the member with the idea to build this project preventing Phishing email, shares about the group project: “Our group only has 4 months to research and build the product and therefore, limitations and mistakes are unavoidable. Thanks to the feedback and advice from experienced experts in the Grading Council, our group has a more detailed direction to bring the project closer to reality. Hopefully, our solution could be brought to the market in the near future.”

Although the group has not graduated, they are very ambitious in trying to tackle a difficult issue and come up with a helpful solution for the Vietnamese market. This research may be an intriguing suggestion for businesses interested in preventing and decreasing incidents regarding information security.
