MTA_R4F from the Military Technical Academy is the highest-ranked team in the 2018-2019 Digital Race after defeating all rivals in the Final round. In the previous decisive match against Fast and Fiery (Technology Post and Telecommunications Academy), MTA_R4F showed the champion’s bravery when continuing to choose the “beat fast, win fast” strategy.
The first round of the Finals is called Discover Vietnam, in which each team has three minutes to program a vehicle to follow the required route given in the five famous landmarks of Vietnam, Hanoi, Hoi An, Son Doong Cave, Sa Pa, and Cuc Phuong forest. Vehicles must automatically avoid obstacles on the track, overcome the challenges that the organizers have given such as tunnels, shade, snow roads, lost lane …
The 10 teams are divided into five pairs to find the four best teams to reach the next round.
The first match was a competition between PTIT Word.Exe (Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology) and DaTeh IT (University of Natural Sciences – National University of Ho Chi Minh City). Two teams did not break rules, in which PTIT Word.Exe reached 2 of the 5 milestones in 8 seconds. DaTeh IT did not score any points.
MTA_R4F (Military Technical Academy) and LHU The Walkers (Lac Hong University) met in the second match. Despite the problem before starting, MTA_R4F completed a full race in 27 seconds. LHU The Walkers performed better, 21 seconds.
Match 3 is the confrontation of UET Fastest (University of Engineering and Technology – Hanoi National University) and Fast and Fiery (Technology and Telecommunications Academy). As the defending champion of Season 2 Race, UET Fastest is also the best team in the Season 3 Semi-Final Round but at the Final, the team only completed one of the 5 milestones. Meanwhile the second representative of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology completed the race in 27 seconds.
The first match between Vietnamese and foreign students is match 4: SQ26 (Communication University) – C305 (Far Eastern Federal University, Russia). This battle received enthusiastic cheers from the audience. Vehicles of both teams had problems during the first departure. After that, the SQ26 vehicle suddenly crashed into the tunnel and had to restart. The C305 started many times but still didn’t get on the right track. As a result, C305 completed two of 5 milestones, 10 seconds time. SQ26 just passed one landmark.
The final match of the first round is the meeting between Meantime (University of Greenwich, England) and CDSNTU2 (Nha Trang University). Meantime passes two of the 5 marks in 16 seconds and the CDSNTU2 took 30 seconds to go through four landmarks.
In the end, two “foreign soldiers”, C305 (Far Eatern Federal University, Russia) and Meantime (University of Greenwich, UK) received enthusiastic cheers from the audience but had to stop the game. The teams continue to come from schools familiar with the Digital Race from the previous season, including Fast and Fiery (Technology and Telecommunications Aceademy), LHU The Walkers (Lac Hong University), MTA_R4F (Technical Academy Military) and CDSNTU2 (Nha Trang University).
The second round of the competition is a knockout round, in which when a team completes the race, the competition will stop, not the best performance. The organizers offer 10 destinations (including Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Singapore, France, Russia, Australia, Egypt, Canada, and the United States) and randomly select points that vehicles need to pass to reach their destination. Within three minutes, besides having to overcome the obstacles and complex paths, the self-propelled vehicles of the teams themselves had to find the shortest and fastest way to their destination.
The first semi-final ended after 59 seconds when MTA_R4F quickly crossed the bridge, ramps, cornering to complete the race. In the knockout round, when the team completes the turn, the match will be stopped, not the best performance.
The semifinal 2 between Fast and Fiery (Technology and Telecommunications Academy) and LHU The Walkers (Lac Hong University). The two teams used up three minutes of the round without completing the race. Fast and Fiery managed to get two out of five milestones despite having spent all three minutes, but LHU The Walkers failed to score. Therefore, this achievement is also enough to help the representative of the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology to enter the Final Round.
The Final round is the speed race between MTA_R4F (Military Technical Academy) and Fast and Fiery (Technology and Telecommunications Institute).
The outstanding performance from the previous rounds showed the strength of the team from the Military Technical Academy. MTA_R4F’s desire to win is evident through speeding up the vehicle even in a decisive match. In contrast, Fast and Fiery (HV Technology and Telecommunications) apply a “slow but firm” strategy. Both teams had problems in the first seconds of the match but the calmness and bravery helped MTA_R4F complete the race to become the winning team.
The representative of the Military Technical Academy came to the podium of the champion and won the prize with a total value of VND 1.2 billion, including an experience trip, learning about the leading advanced technology at US for one week, VND 15 million in cash and a doctoral scholarship in Artificial Intelligence worth VND 700 million for the excellent candidate.
MTA_R4F consists of four third and fourth-year students, each with excellent personal achievements such as the Hanoi Mathematical Excellence Student Award or high prizes in the IT Olympiad for many years. Representatives from the Military Technical Academy have impressed the judges from the semi-finals as the second strongest team in the Northern region with 25 seconds to complete.
Smart handle of algorithms, stable performance and experience gained from previous exams helps them become champions. MTA_R4F is also the team that is highly appreciated by the professional committee from the beginning of the season with solid play.
The digital race is a self-propelled technology competition organized by FPT and VTV. Teams will have to apply image processing technology, artificial intelligence (AI) to program the self-positioning vehicle to find the shortest path, move on any road and overcome obstacles in conditions of light changes. The car model used in the final has a size of 1/7 compared to the actual car, with the maximum speed of 50 km/h.
