Inspired by an English teaching application, praised by Forbes and built by a Vietnamese startup, a group of students from FPT Education had successfully researched and developed an English speaking and listening software, with extra functions similar to a miniature social network.

In the 4.0 era of Internet of Things, English is the mutual language that brings the world closer. However, according to the English Proficiency Index, established by Education First, English fluency in Vietnam sees little improvement, especially lacking in speaking and listening skills.

Having learned using 100% in English, and searched for learning assistant software for this language, this group from FPT Education, including Pham Thi Minh Anh, Nguyen Duy Quang, Vu Quang Minh, Tran Nhu Quynh, and Dang Anh Tuan, had had plenty experience with learning English online. However, so far, there is no product that had satisfy them.

Under the guidance of Teacher Bui Ngoc Anh, the team had the idea to create their own English speaking practice software, with customizable functions that can motivate learners. In 3 months, the product had come to reality, and was recently introduced as the team’s graduation project.

The major function of the software – Let’s Talk, is to create a channel for people with the same needs of conversing and practicing English, generating a virtual environment for users to practice at any time, and from anywhere.

According to the students, Let’s Talk was built as a social network for people with the need to learn English. Here, they can practice with others anytime, share their knowledge and experience, as well as track and store other people’s sharings. SNS is also a widely-accepted platform, friendly and attractive to young people.

For “conversations” on Let’s Talk to be efficient, based on entrance exams, the system also automatically research and suggest other users with the same learning targets (like IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC scores…), with the same level of proficiency.

Furthermore, when users make video calls with one another using pre-selected Hashtags, vocabulary Hints will be automatically displayed for more efficiency, longer time, and more diverse contents.

Users can also contribute topical vocabularies to the system, as well as save their own or others’ contributions. From these, the system will automatically generate vocabulary tests for users to study. The contributions will also diversify topics and relevant vocabularies on the system.

The application allows users to select speaking topics and save vocabularies.

Let’s Talk is built using a Java platform, along with various other tools to create functions for the system, especially functions regarding real time social network, with live notifications, online statues, call history and missed call, following and followers regime, vocab saving…

Sharing about Let’s Talk, Pham Thi Minh Anh, Head of the student group had said: “There are many potentials in Let’s Talk in development newer and more useful functions. For example, there’s publishing of conversation videos to save as a learning databases, subtitles, and grammatically corrected videos. Via those, users of lower levels can learn from more proficient ones.”

A real survey on a small group of users had showed that the product will be most effective in high schools, universities, and English centers – where homework is still assigned in the traditional way. Via Let’s Talk, teachers can publish speaking topics and vocabularies as homework, at the same time encourage students to converse in English through the system for that at least 30 minutes per day, which will tremendously improve their speaking skills.

Through its many smart functions, Let’s Talk not only provides an environment for practice at anytime, anywhere, but also encourage free exchange and learning of language, eliminating the need to find a suitable environment.

At the moment, under the guidance of their teacher – FPT Education’s Professor Bui Ngoc Anh, the Let’s Talk Team are improving some production functions, including: Reports on the number of people in conversation, new registrations, Gmail sync, voice identification, and account’s bio update. They also believe in the product’s ability, and plan to soon introduce them to app stores for more user access.
