Vietnam STEAM Challenge (VSC) in 2020, created by Maker Hanoi, is a project creating a learning environment through exposure to science and technology activities and providing opportunities for youngsters to become more creative and pursue their passions.

VSC, organized by Maker Hanoi, is a nation-wide robot competition to promote STEAM activities among young people. Maker Hanoi will be responsible for designing the contents of programming kits, preparing documents, supporting teams throughout the competition and building the K12 Maker kit. Particularly, participating in the contest, competitors have opportunities to build robots themselves and win billions of dong.

Structure and process of making a robot

A robot is a machine built to take charge of one or many tasks. In simpler terms, a robot is a computer programmed with additional motor, mechanical components that can easily move to perform their tasks.

A robot consists of 3 parts, namely electronics, mechanics and programming. Electronics, like blood vessels in a body, helps connect different parts and signal to the robots brain and the heart of the robot is the source generating energy for robots. Mechanics are actuators that help robots move and perform movements. Mechanics are similar to human muscles. A person who build this components are required to be proficient in spatial and dynamic motor skills. Programming, the robot’s brain, is a task that requires good logical thinking, combining with sensor signals, to control the mechanical structures that move smoothly to accomplish the tasks.

The process of building a robot consists of three main steps which are designing mechanical ideas and manufacturing, wiring such electronic devices as sensors and then programming robots. However, these steps will be repeated depending on each feature of the robot and product requirements. People often have blueprints for each robot or each feature. They will manufacture electronic and mechanical parts for that specialized function and test each programm individually. When the basic functions are completed, they will be put into a complete product to test and identify solution for current problems and continue to advance the robot. The common difficulties for beginners is power electronics field and programming languages. In every competitions in the world, these two stages are often simplified by blocks and KIT to pack some technologies to help young people shorten their time of making robots.

Become a robotic expert with VSC

Participating in Vietnam STEAM Challenge (VSC), you will have an electronic and mechanical KIT to build yourself a complete robot. Then use the drag and drop programming tools – Node-Red or programming languages ​​like C / Python to help the robot work.

  • Raspberry Pi 4: a computer with embedded systems, the most favorite technology product of this decade;
  • Node Red: IBM’s open source software helps programmers approach IoT / Robot programming;
  • C / Python: programming language on Pi;
  • K12 Maker: power circuit, signal with 4 outputs of DC motor, 4 servo motors and 10 sensors;
  • 2600mAh 3S – 11.1V li-po battery;
  • DC motor and servo motor;
  • Sensor: color sensor, obstacle detection sensor, trip-close obstacle switch.
