The Ministry of Transport has just sent an official letter to FPT Software Company for testing the autonomous car in the internal road of Saigon Hi-Tech Region. The Ministry of Transport confirmed supporting the development of the company’s self-driving cars because it is a program that is in line with the world trend and the government’s 4.0 industrial revolution development strategy.
In order to test the self-driving car in the highways of the high-tech zone, the Ministry of Transport asked FPT Software to work with the high-tech agency to approve the plan to conduct internal road test of the industrial park, take responsibility for traffic safety inside the hi-tech park with direct supervision on the car and supervise the outside to ensure absolute safety when testing. The company shall have to sum up and report to the Ministry of Communications and Transport the test results of self-driving car in internal roads of hi-tech parks and plans on handling issues arising in the course of testing on public roads once permitted by the authority.
According to Mr. Pham Minh Tuan, General Director of FPT Software, from early 2016, the company has set up FGA (FPT Global Automotive) department to develop automotive applications in 3 segments including self-propelled car, safety system, and entertainment system. So far, FGA has 2,000 employees working in the Automotive field including hardware, software, and mechanical design. The unit has enough force to participate in developing most of the car’s functions.
Mr. La Quang Vinh, Deputy Director of FGA, said the goal of the FGA is to broaden its development by 2020 focusing on key areas in the automotive software industry. By 2022, FGA expects to become the largest automotive service provider. And the goal of 2025 is to make 10 percent of the software available in cars around the world to be developed by FPT. “At present, more than 100 million lines of code have been created by FPTers. There are some cars deployed by FPT 5-10%, even some with 50%”, Mr. Vinh added.
In October, 2016, the driver assistance system research project – ADAS. In April and June 2017, the FGA studied self-driving car for image processing and auto driving with artificial intelligence. Especially, on October 31, 2017, FPT also announced the first self-propelled car in Vietnam.
According to the FGA representative, the cars were offered to the eight finalists of the 2017-2018 Digital Race on May 17th are the same as the one-tenth of the authentic self-steering car that FPT is researching on.
Up to now, there have been 3 versions of FPT’s self-driving car, including the miniature version of the early prototype model (with most functions removed, able to navigate in the first version of electric cars (can run around FPT Da Nang, can be controlled by smartphones) and the latest self-driving version (can drive around FPT Software Campus in Ho Chi Minh City, using a variety of new technologies such as SLAM, Sensor Fusion, Model Predictive Control).
Autonomous car versions of FPT are supported with End-to-end Deep Learning algorithms, which use artificial intelligence to control the car to avoid obstacles, bypassers, and traffic signals…
“Reveal” on the latest achievements in the field of FGA auto driving, representatives of the company said that the current test version of self-driving cars of FPT reached an average speed of 20km/h and speed 40 km/h in straight lines; with over 1,000 hours of self-driving without any problems; Deep Learning model is trained by more than 1 TB of data drive.
In addition, the test version of self-driving car developed by FPT is now able to run on a variety of weather conditions such as sunny, cloudy, rainy and low light; reduce latency to less than 20m; mechanical system on the steering wheel is more aesthetic; at the same time the braking system is being improved.
